Dr S A Richmond St Joseph , MO. Circa 1890s The main treatment of the medicine was fits (epilepsy) and nervous diseases but the maker also made totally outrageous claims that the medicine could change peoples moral character. I found this a pretty unusual claim in the patent medicine business.
On the surface Dr Richmond appeared to be a religious and
moral man. He published several papers on religion and
morality.
An example "Divine Healing Mind and Faith Cure" http://books.google.com/books?id=xURDAA ... t&resnum=1 His medicine's name was even based on the the Old Testament parable of the Good Samaritan. His business dealings however showed another side to the good doctor. He was involved in a number of shady dealings with his medicine companies. Some famous trademark case law examples are based on his dealings. This link points to a law suit where Richmond was found to commit fraud with the company that was named after him.. http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/d ... eid=414164 Of obvious interest to bottle collectors is the embossed image on the bottle. This is the face of Dr Richmond himself... Bottle Description : clear, tooled tapered lip, cup mold, |
